Lois Black

Self-taught sculptor Jack Black introduced his daughter Lois to the art at a very early age. Working with her father, whose own body of work includes over 300 pieces, Lois produced a line of limited-edition glazed stoneware figures depicting Southwestern, Native American, religious and contempory motifs and sold them from their Tucson studio from the late 80s until its close after Jack’s death in 2002.

Lois Black’s training started in childhood with Bulgarian painter Dimitar Krustev of Ajijic, Mexico, and includes studies at The Scottsdale Artists’ School, The Chicago Art Institute and, most recently, at Italy’s Florence Academy of Art. Lois continues to concentrate on figurative drawing and sculpting in order to refine and increase her body of work, while at the same time focusing on her love of dance based on a lifetime of ballet training and performing.

Artist Statement

Drawn to the challenge of capturing the beauty of ballet, I have studied the human figure in motion all my life. The product of an artistic family, I have always been interested in recreating those beautiful lines—the arabesque, the lovely curve of the foot, the matching curves of the arm as it extends into space and takes our eyes on a journey that lasts but a fleeting moment. My passion is to represent this dynamic beauty in a permanent medium that allows us to enjoy it whenever we desire.
