Tom
Carter was born in Louisiana and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from
Louisiana
State University in 1993.
Tom first started sculpting in 1983 after traveling to the Black Forest
in Germany. He became fascinated by the woodcarvings done by the master
German craftsmen and decided that he wanted to do that too. He read any
book on wood carving or sculpting he could find. Then he read How
to Carve Wood, by Richard Butz, and knew he had to sculpt
a bird. The first bird was an Osprey. Tom worked in the Video Game industry
for
eight
years applying his skill as a 3D animator. During this time he never
stopped sculpting. In addition to sculpting birds from wood, Tom also
sculpts in
concrete. His concrete and wood creations range from sculptures to furniture
and doors.
Tom
visited Arizona when he was a child and decided that one day he would live
here
in Tucson.
His favorite sculpting subjects are the birds and
other animals
native to the Sonoran Desert. Tom currently lives and sculpts in Tucson
with his wife of 13 years and his two children.
