Helen
Serras-Herman is a Gem Sculptor and Jewelry Designer, with over 20 years
of experience in unique gem sculpture work, including
freestanding sculptures and jewelry art. Helen’s award winning, bold
contemporary work on hard gemstones has been featured in several trade
magazines and books. Her favorite subjects are Mythological Creatures
and Portraits. Her figurative works display dynamic facial expressionism
and are immediately recognizable. All of her pieces are one-of-a-kind,
signed and sold with a Certificate of Authenticity. Several of her
pieces have been direct commissions from private clients.
All of
her Jewelry Art is set in 18K or 14K gold, or Sterling Silver, with
a palette of
gemstones, such as fancy color sapphires & garnets, tanzanite,
diamonds, red spinels, opals and tourmalines. Helen often uses themes
with mythological
creatures, especially from the ancient Greek mythology that is deep
in her soul, as they allow for dynamic expressionism, infinite variations
and exaggerated features. The often distorted, preposterous facial
features
are counterbalanced by the serenity reflected by her feature elongation.
Helen derives her inspiration from the complexity of human figures,
faces, characters and emotions. Helen holds a Masters degree (MFA)
in Sculpture
from the prestigious ‘Hochschuele Der Kuenste’ (University of Arts)
in West Berlin, Germany, where she studied from 1976-1983. She has
also
studied Gem Sculpture, Drawing, Painting and History of Art, and has
earned her degree in Gemology (FGA).
In 2003, Helen Serras-Herman was inducted
into the Lapidary Hall of Fame.
Besides
her artistic work she also writes articles, teaches and lectures on
several historical
and practical
aspects of gem
sculpture. From 1988
to present Helen has given nationwide over 55 lectures to 23
Societies and Associations. Her work and has been featured in several
trade magazines
(Lapidary Journal, JCK, Rock & Gem, The Guide Gem Market
News, Australian Metal, Stone & Glass, Colored Stone, American
Gemcutter),

in Lapidary).
“Serras-Herman is probably one of the most
extensively trained artists working in Gem carving in North America
- and it
shows in her work...Coming
to gem carving from the vantage point of large-scale
sculpture, Helen Serras-Herman creates miniature masterpieces underscored
by centuries of art history”
